Putting drills

It is not always required to invest in expensive putting training aids to practice your game on the green. Excellent putting can be achived by the use of three techniques – shoulders square, clubface square and distance control.

Shoulders Square

Using an old club, place it across your chest securing under each armpit. Putt as usual keeping the club in place. This keeps your upper body, especially your shoulders solid preventing opening up the chest. This technique will keep the pendulmn effect in your stroke.

Clubface Square

Maintaining a square putter face to the ball is important in the short game. Try following these easy instructions to maintain the correct square for short putts.
Place your putter behind the ball and place a tee in the ground either side of your putter.
Use your normal putting stroke swinging the club back and forth between the tees without touching them.

Distance Control

Gauging the correct distance and accuracy to the pin is essential in keeping your scores low. A good drill to improve in this area is called over the line.
Place a tee in the ground to make your starting point.
Place a second tee ten to twelve feet away from the first tee, making a triangle.
Put a third tee in the ground another seven to eight feet away.
Using five or six balls, the aim is to putt the balls between the tees that are 7 to 8 feet apart.
In order to make this more difficult each putt has to stop past the first tee and with each additional shot the ball must pass the last putt but stop short of the last tee.

Anytime a ball travels beyond the last tee start again. As you improve, make this drill more tricky by practicing uphill and downhill. As you become more proficient move the two tees closer together and increase the distance from the starting point.
